Since I was a young, I’ve loved St. Patrick’s Day. Honestly, I couldn’t tell you why. We have no Irish ancestry, no real ties to catholic saints and haven’t been known to drive snakes out of anywhere. It’s probably the corned beef and cabbage my mother would always make — it’s still seriously one of my favorite meals. As I got older, I discovered the other side of good ol’ St. Patrick: the drinking scene. (You don’t really think about that as a kid.) One thing I’ve never supported? Artificially green beer. One thing I do? Green cocktails. Let’s get our St. Patrick’s Day on with the Green Fizz.
The Green Fizz? I know. Kinda sounds like an action hero, right?
Heck, if you drink enough, you can probably become an action hero.
There are many classic fizzes, this being one of them. The basic recipe is pretty easy: booze, citrus, sweetener and some fizzy water.
If for some reason, you’re not in the mood for a fizz, but really want a green drink, try out a Grasshopper. You’ll still get your St. Patrick points for being on theme.
With the Green Fizz, we’re working with gin (and a splash of crème de menthe, green!), lemon juice and sugar. For extra fizz, there’s some egg white in there.
As is usual with cocktails that have raw eggs in them, don’t worry, it’s perfectly safe. Just be smart about it. We always get organic, free range eggs. Treat them well. Don’t leave them out and keep them months beyond their expiration. For all of the raw egg drinks and dishes we make, the grand total of issues we’ve had is zero.
Be smart, be safe and you shouldn’t have an issue.
As this has egg white in it, it’s another cocktail you’ll want to shake a little extra to extra foam it up and build some bubbles for the club soda to catch.
Enough with the preamble, onto the Green Fizz and for some green action for St. Patrick’s Day!
