templeton-barrel-strength-straight-rye-whiskey.png?w=116&h=300First introduced in 2018, this year’s release of Templeton Barrel Strength Straight Rye Whiskey celebrates the exceptional aging casks that are currently maturing at the Templeton, Iowa distillery. Each year, a select number of noteworthy barrels, which vary in ages and maturity, are chosen. The whiskeys are then married or vatted together and bottled at 115.8 proof.

This year’s special release is sourced from Indiana (Midwest Grain Processors) with a mash bill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley. The spirit is bottled at the Templeton distillery at 57.9% ABV, a higher percentage than the 2018 edition.

“We were inspired by the wonderful reception that the 2018 Barrel Strength release received and are excited to share this new bottling with our fans that we feel is both complex and intriguing,” said Tim Grimes, Brand Ambassador of Templeton Rye. “Our Barrel Strength line represents our beloved whiskey in its purest form while allowing us to salute the hometown of Templeton and our residents’ strong spirit.”

Templeton Rye Barrel Strength (115.8 proof)
Visual: Medium copper.
Nose: The rye features prominently, showcasing the spice and nutmeg heat of the spirit.
Taste: More compact and intense, the grain bill takes prominence making for a heartier and more direct approach. After a minute, the intensity cools down allowing for a cinnamon-like kick to finish.
Finish: Long and with more of the cinnamon sensation.
Overall: Surprisingly, this is a completely different experience than the regular Templeton Rye. More of an aggressive whiskey, this begs for different amounts of dilution to find your particular “sweet spot”.
GSN Rating: A-
