Next Sunday, Game of Thrones fans around the world will gather to watch the long-awaited return of HBO’s hit series. “Winds of Winter,” the finale episode of Season 6, had a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and hopes are high for Season 7. Winter is here – but these Bourbon cocktails are perfect for this summer’s viewing parties.
The Khal Drogo
The Khal Drogo
A recent experiment from Jason Curtsinger at Belle’s Cocktail House in Lexington, KY, The Khal Drogo combines Buffalo Trace, Elderflower Liqueur, and lemon and blood orange juices for a deep red drink perfect for Dothraki bloodriders.
As he garnishes with an orchid, Curtsinger describes the drink as “fruity but boozy,” with enough Bourbon to make it strong enough for the whole horde. A pitcher of these is sure to be a crowd pleaser, and will disappear in no time.
The Red Woman
The night is dark and full of terrors – and so is this subtly bitter and complex cocktail from The Game of Thrones Pop up Bar in Washington, D.C. Only open for the summer, this PUB is decorated with Instagram-worthy scenes and props (including a Weirwood Tree and Danaery’s dragons) for guests to pose with as they sip. “[The Red Woman] is an amalgamation of the Manhattan and Brooklyn cocktail, which contains Evan Williams White Label, Cocchi Di Torino, Luxardo Maraschino and Bigallet China China,” says bar manager Paul Taylor. Visit their site here for more details.
The Great Khal’s bride (another concoction from the mixology masterminds at Belle’s Cocktail House) may take us a step away from Bourbon, but not too far – its made with Wheatley Vodka distilled in Kentucky at Buffalo Trace. It has the same elderflower, lemon, and blood orange mixture as it’s Bourbon husband The Khal Drogo, but the vodka makes it slightly less spicy than the more masculine Drogo.
Game of Thrones Season 7 premiers Sunday, July 16th at 9 pm EST.
