At first glance, this seems like it would be highly sweet and one-dimensional.  But, surprisingly, it isn’t.  There’s a hefty dose of alcohol here (2.25 oz) to offset the orange juice.  But, the real key is the use of spanish brandy.  The funkiness of a solera aged brandy breaks through the orange and adds a mysterious richness to everything.

When using a dark rum, I suggest Gosling’s or Myer’s.  If you want to try a spiced rum, that will work well too, especially during the holidays.

Bull’s Blood
0.75oz dark rum
0.75oz curacao
0.75oz spanish brandy
1.5oz orange juice
Garnish: orange twist flamed

Shake with ice and strain into chilled cocktail glass.  Flame orange zest and add.
