This summer I privileged to attend the launch of Carte Blanche à Baptiste Loiseau, a new Cognac from Rémy Martin. This expression was crafted by the new Cellar Master Baptiste Loiseau.

Loiseau, at 36, took over two years ago from Pierrette Trichet as Cellar Master of Maison de Rémy Martin.

With the motto “You are not born a Cellar Master, you become one”, Loiseau is renowned for his revitalizing energy and attitude. He is often credited with transforming the image of Cognac, taking it out of the decanters of old men and placing it firmly in the glasses of a younger generation.

The launch was thrilling, beginning with a walk through the vineyards of Cognac. These are praised as “the best place in the world for cognac production due to the hilly environment, chalky soil and unique microclimate”.

Loiseau showed his passion, telling us about the special terroir and the process of making Cognac. He was especially enthusiastic about finding the best local eaux-de-vie for the Rémy Martin style.

We were also treated to a talk from Sonia, who discussed her experiences as a local producer, crafting the best produce for Rémy Martin’s VSOP, XO, Carte Blanche and other blends.

Sonia, like Loiseau, was passionate about her work as she talked about the pressure of creating the best product.

She pours effort into making her eaux-de-vie, before sending it to be sampled at Rémy Martin. Ultimately she is rewarded when she "noses a Rémy Martin release and instantly smells home”.

These inspiring talks expressed the human emotion and dedication that goes into every Rémy Martin expression. We were also treated to lunch, complete with string quartet and a visit to a caviar farm to learn more about their produce.

Loiseau explained the history and terroir of Rémy Martin as we followed him through the atmospheric warehouse.

This Cognac is not industry redefining, but that is part of the draw.

The most important aspect of Carte Blanche is that it embodies Rémy Martin or as Loiseau put it, “the very essence of a cognac house is its continuity. Every day we work thanks to the heritage which has been handed down to us”.

Rémy Martin Carte Blanche, with an ABV of 41.1%, is limited to 7,000 bottles. It will be released in Manchester this September at a price of around $399.

This expression is an investment and a part of every good collection. It will probably become part of further releases and is worth the purchase.

The expression is made up of eaux-de-vie from the Grande and Petite Champagne regions of Cognac. Certain expressions used were aged a minimum of twenty years and some are much older.

It is sublime. The nose is slightly spicy and aromatic, while the palate has beautiful smoky notes that maintain the warming spice. There are subtle fruitier notes and lingering finish.

With Rémy Martin’s 300th anniversary approaching it was incredible to experience the dedication of Loiseau and his team in their achievements.
