Bloody Mary

I was recently in Madison, Wisconsin for the weekend. One morning for breakfast, which turned into brunch as there was booze in the form of the a beautiful big Bloody Mary, we went to Short Stack Eatery. I am not a sweets person so I avoided the pancakes. I was all about the eggs!

However, if you do want to go the sweets route, I spied an interesting sweet potato oatmeal stack of pancakes. The bourbon mascarpone sounded amazing. I was also interested in the pecan streusel French toast. So here’s your game plan, get your savory breakfast and then split a sweet breakfast as dessert. I’m jus’ sayin’.

eggs

A friend had a very healthy scrambled eggs and fruit breakkie along with pancakes. He did the pick three which you had a choice of a buttermilk short stack, breakfast meat, two eggs, fresh fruit, breakfast potatoes or mixed greens. If I had to compile three items, I would have gone with sausage, eggs and breakfast potatoes. See, I’m not that sort of healthy breakfast sort.

The Blind – breakfast sandwich

Short Stack has a really cool “dealer’s choice” type breakfast called, “The Blind.” Basically you place your trust in them. Our server said it’s usually some sort of breakfast sandwich and indeed it was. It turns out this one was a really great eggs and bacon sandwich with fried green tomatoes. The salad was a nice touch though Booze Dancing didn’t eat any of it! Ha, he must be in the Delicious Breakfast Club I’m in.

pulled pork and cheesy grits

In retrospect, I probably should have gotten a poached egg or an over easy egg with my pulled pork and cheesy grits but I defaulted to my usual breakfast egg- soft scrambled. Which honestly wasn’t bad with my savory breakfast.

This is a local treasure with a long line. The good thing is they do serve hours beyond breakfast and are even open late on some nights.
