One of the most popular and simplest riffs on a traditional Old Fashioned – who doesn’t love Maple syrup!?

The Maple Old Fashioned has only a slight variation on it’s big brother. The difference is the removal of sugar (whether it be a sugar cube or sugar syrup) and replace it with a good quality maple syrup. You can go down the easy path and simply put straight maple into your Old Fashioned and make sure you stir a little longer for more dilution…or you can make a thinner syrup by mixing two parts maple syrup to one part water (heat on stove to mix) which is my preferred method.

Keep it Canadian by using a Canadian Whisky in addition to the Canadian maple syrup as per Jeffery Morgenthaler’s recipe in his book, The Bar Book: Elements of Cocktail Technique (highly recommended).

Mixing Glass

1. Add ice to your mixing glass

Add Bourbon Whisky

2. Add 60mL of bourbon whisky

Add Maple syrup

3. Add 5mL of maple simple syrup

Add Angostura Bitters

4. Add a dash of Angostura bitters

Add Orange Bitters

5. Add a dash of orange bitters

Stir Old Fashioned

6. Stir for 20 seconds

Strain over Ice

7. Strain over fresh ice

Maple Old Fashioned

8. Garnish with a twist of orange
