Rubescent Glow


1.oz Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel (or other high proof bourbon)

.5oz Amaro Averna

.25oz Cherry Heering

1brspn Maraschino

Dash Rhubarb bitters

Luxardo Cherries


Add the Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel (or other high-proof bourbon), Amaro Averna, Cherry Heering, Maraschino and Rhubarb bitters to a chilled mixing glass. Add ice and stir until well chilled. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with the cherries.


All cherry and whiskey on the nose. The higher proof Russell’s Single Barrel works well in this one, standing up to the sweeter cherry flavors. A bouquet of cherry flavor is accented by the caramel and herbal contrast of the Averna. The finish bitters up a bit. This one is heavy and sweet, making for a great after dinner sipper.

Rubescent Glow 2


A bastardized play on the Redhook, this one features high-proof bourbon and a combination of Cherry Heering and Amaro Averna instead of vermouth. While it does pack a punch, the cherry flavor takes center stage in this one. In fact, I was originally planning to submit Rubescent Glow as an additional recipe for MxMo Cherries a few months back, but never quite got it together. Besides it tastes better now that it’s starting to cool off outside and is sure to come in handy over the holidays after a big meal.

You might have noticed that the recipe makes a pretty small drink, which for something sweeter like this I think is preferable. If you’re feeling frisky you could always double it to make a more “normal” sized cocktail. Just don’t send me your insulin bill if you get diabetes.
