Our February kit featured Belvoir Elderflower and Rose Lemonade. Here's the story behind the brand:
Tell us about Belvoir and its history.
We were founded over 30 years ago by Lord and Lady John Manners, lords of the castle of Belvoir in the Vale of Belvoir, nestled deep in the English countryside. Handpicking elderflowers from the family fruit farm, we started by making elderflower cordial following Lady Manners' family recipe. Since then, we've expanded to making more than 40 different products, of which 11 are sold here in the U.S.
Tell us more about Belvoir's cordials? What is a cordial and what is its historical significance?
An elderflower cordial is a syrup, traditionally made from elderflower, lemon, and sugar, which is meant to be diluted with water and ice for a refreshing summer drink. Although it has a strong Victorian heritage (that's why we love it in England), elderflower cordials have been made and enjoyed in Europe since Roman antiquity, so we're not reinventing the wheel by any means!
How has Belvoir changed its product over the years and what remains the same?
As we've grown, we've strived to maintain the same quality and care of our cordials and lemonades as if we were still making it in our kitchens. Obviously, our scale demands that we now make our drinks in our own factory, located a few miles away from Belvoir Castle, and our keenness for innovation has pushed us to craft more drinks with intriguing and unorthodox ingredients. Our newest line of lemonades, Cucumber and Mint, Dragonfruit and Raspberry, Lime and Lemongrass, and Apple and Elderflower, are progenies of that creative mindset.
What are some challenges you face?
Being beautiful can be tiresome.
What are some ways Belvoir is being used in cocktails currently?
It's amazing to see how many different combinations of cocktails can be made with our drinks. Considering the range of different recipes we maintain, the possibilities for cocktail concoctions are endless really, if you're the adventurous type! We have a few favorites of course, like the Dark and Stormy, with our Ginger Beer, and the Fresh Prince of Belvoir, made with our Elderflower Lemonade. We've got plenty of cocktail recipes on our website so feel free to check them out! http://www.belvoirfruitfarms.com/cocktails/
Tell us about an exciting moment for your brand?
We were really happy to have launched our newest line of organic products, since they were recipes that were quite different from our original offering, and obviously, quite distinct from the rest of the craft drinks available on the market. We feel that we now have a Belvoir that fits every personality, whether it is the exotic and alluring Dragonfruit and Raspberry, the light and airy Cucumber and Mint, or the vibrant and earthy Lime and Lemongrass.
What's next? Any new flavors or products in the pipeline you can share?
Tut, tut, we won't divulge any of our secrets but rest assured that Belvoir will always have new and fascinating things to share with the world. As you say in America, stay tuned for more!
