If Drinking had a high holiday, that holiday would be Repeal Day. On December 5, 1933, the 21st Amendment was fully ratified in our Constitution which effectively repealed the 18th Amendment, the very malefactor that had brought about Prohibition in the first place. Thus, drinking no longer had to happen in clandestine speakeasies, giving Americans the freedom to get sloshed publicly with the weight of the constitution to back them. “I have the right to drink here! The Constitution said I could! So there!” Yikes! So, if you are looking for a few watering holes to exercise your rights, here are some Los Angeles Bars who are keen on helping you get your Repeal Day on – just don’t be that guy.
The Umbrella is raining on Friday! They’ve got 1933 prices for you, serving up 5 Cent Old Fashioneds for your first drink! After that there are $5 Old Fashioned’s, Fernet & Old Forester Shots, and Carpano Americanos ALL DAY AND NIGHT. Win some swag with Raffles every hour on the hour!
Sassafras | BigFoot & BigFoot West | Harlowe | La Cuevita | Oldfield’s | The Thirsty Crow
All the 1933 Bars will be celebrating the Death of the 18th Amendment with a select Repeal Day Cocktail that will only cost you a buck all through Happy Hour (limit two per person). At Sassafras, they will be serving up $1 old Fashioneds from 5p-7p to toast to the end of Prohibition!
Big Bar has a special Barrel Aged Twelve Five Rye Reserve Cocktail to mark the occasion. This drink is made with an American whiskey bearing the namesake of this joyous occasion – the Twelve Five Rye! Starting at 12:05pm on Friday, Big Bar will be releasing this special barrel aged version of The Repeal cocktail (the Repeal Reserve) – so get there early to try the limited edition Repeal cocktail – serving until they’re dry.
If you’re Downtown, you can do some good while you get your drink on. From 4-8pm Ebanos Crossing is hosting a Repeal Day Happy Hour where a portion of the proceeds will go to Inspire Artistic Minds to help give scholarships to bartenders and connect them to educational experiences. In other words: help those bartenders help you. There will also be $1 tacos and $5 old fashioneds and a few more surprises.
Where will you be for Repeal Day?
